If you have never built a website before, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get your first domain live and operational in only minutes is to install WordPress on your website.

WordPress is a blogging platform that allows you to have a pre-built website for free that will allow you to focus on the more important items like content, and if you desire it, sales and profits.

WordPress Benefits

In more than a decade online, I have literally built dozens of websites, many from the ground up… But since I discovered the ease of use and powerful flexibility of the WordPress platform, I am building most of my newest websites under this Content Management System (CMS).

The reasons I prefer the WordPress blogging platform are many, but I will sum it up with the following five key benefits:

1. Quick and Easy Installation – If you have a web hosting company that runs cPanelX as your webmasters’ control panel (many of the more popular web hosting companies do), then you will find an option in your control panel called, “Fantastico De Luxe”. When you click on the Fantastico icon, you will be taken to a page where you can add a multitude of free applications to your website, by following some simple instructions. Just click on the WordPress link to install WordPress on your website. The software will ask you some basic general information, then do the full install of one of the most recent WordPress builds into your website.

2. Website Themes – Few webmasters want to use the generic WordPress Theme that ships with WordPress. The default WP Theme is plain Jane, and to my taste, perfectly drab. There are many people who design custom WordPress Themes that you can easily upload to your domain, to change the appearance and feel of your WordPress website. Some of the WP Themes are paid versions, but most of them are free. There are more than one thousand themes loaded directly into the WordPress website ( wordpress.org/extend/themes/ ), from which you can choose, although you are not limited to just the themes loaded into the WordPress website.

3. Website Functionality – Just like with the WordPress Themes, if there is a specific functionality you want your blog to perform, there are programmers out there who have made WordPress Plugins that will do for you those things you would like to do. There are nearly 8,000 WordPress Plugins on the WordPress.org website ( wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ ), and thousands more that are not in the WordPress database. If you find a Plugin you want, just download, unzip, and upload it to the appropriate Plugin directory on your blog. After you have uploaded the Plugin, simply go to the Admin area of your Blog to activate the software.

4. Open Source – WordPress has been built in PHP, and its source code is visible to everyone who wants to look at it. On top of that, WordPress has included comprehensive documentation and a range of functions to help programmers work within the WordPress Codex. Anyone with a minimal knowledge of PHP can program WordPress Themes and Plugins, without too much effort.

5. Self-Updating – In recent versions, WordPress has included a feature that will notify you if upgrades are available for the basic WordPress operating system or your chosen WP Plugins. When upgrades become available, you will be notified, and often you only need to click a link to automatically install the upgrades and updates.

I have a friend who is a PHP coder by trade. I try not to mention WordPress in his presence, because every time I do so, I get an ear-full of “WordPress Sucks…”

To be honest with you, I still like WordPress… I like it, because it is easy to install and maintain, and I can improve it easily by using templates and plugins.

I am a coder, but life is too short to spend all of my time coding new websites… I am happy to spend my time creating content that will lead to sales… So for me, WordPress is good, and I am happy to put it on as many websites as I need to do…

If you are new to the Internet, then you might agree that WordPress is a blessing to those of us, who have more important things to do than to recreate the wheel…

Web hosting is divided into 2 categories, Linux and Windows plans. Getting a website with a Windows plan will be more expensive because of license issue with Microsoft. There are thousands of web hosting companies out there using either Linux or Windows plans. Which one is better? Like many other things, different people will have different preferences.

The Windows operating can be found in 95% of all personal computers around the globe. With this numbers in hand, Windows is the dominant figure and most people will go for this kind when they shop for a web hosting company.

As for web servers, Linux based hosting plan seem to have the upper hand based on a study made by securityspace.com. It is said that Windows based servers are behind by 20%. Therefore, if you are using Linux based hosting plan, you will probably have no problems at all. However, the Windows hosting is suitable to be used in a few scenarios.

When you are using .NET technologies including ASP.Net which is not available in Linux platforms, you will need to use Windows hosting plan. Another issue is the access to database which is also only available in Windows hosting plan. With Windows hosting plan, you will have access to MySQL class database. Furthermore, you can use Microsoft programs like Sharepoint which is available in Frontpage 2003.

As for Linux hosting, you can run your website professionally with Apache, MySQL and PHP which can provide you with the infrastructure that can build you a very good website. This is because PHP is more efficient when running with Linux server compared to Windows server. Another good thing about using Linux server is it will cost 20% cheaper compared to a Windows server. Therefore, depending on your preferences, Linux system could still be very good and efficient.

I got my first computer in 1982 – an IBM PC 8088 (no dash-2), 64k of SOLDERED system memory, 2 full height floppy drives, a green screen with no graphics, and an 80cps Epson printer, with Graftrax…woo hoo!

I was guilted into starting my first BBS (bulletin board system) by my son, who had started his own, known as Druid’s Keep…a dos-based role playing game board. Mine had to be bigger of course, and ultimately sported 3 gigabytes of files, multiple CD drives, including CD-changers, all on a 3-node Lantastic network, running Wildcat Multiuser BBS. Wow

Fast forward a few years, and I needed software to go into the dialup ISP business. I prowled around, did not like the cost of what I saw (never mind the technical savvy required) and settled on Worldgroup, the newly named successor to The Major BBS, which had a powerful plugin available called Major TCP/IP, making it Internet dial-in-enabled, incoming telnet, ftp-able, etc. In addition, it supported Radius, so I could plug in my beloved Livingston portmasters…the year was 1995.

A few years (and several business changes and IT providers) later, I began testing out a new form of community software known as ecobuilder (e community builder)…unfortunately written in cold fusion. Running on Microsoft NT servers with SQL7, and requiring the cold fusion server, it never really took off. So I poked around and joined a merry band of miscreants who had shown the inventor of php-nuke the door and branched – into Postnuke, a CMS that, along with phpnuke, was largely responsible for the widespread acceptance and depth of features evident in the modern CMS’ we enjoy today. If you would like to see what some of the original cast of characters from Postnuke are doing these days, check out – Xaraya – it is not for the CMS newcomer, but what a powerhouse.

I have now moved on from Postnuke, and, contrary to half-hearted attempts over a year ago with the platform, am happy to report that the relatively young open-source fork project of Joomla – a breakaway from an older CMS known as Mambo, has a developer community literally on drugs, churning out high-value components, add-ons and themes, SEF (search engine friendly) URLs, and most important of all: MARKETING CAPABILITIES!

When choosing a platform on which to blog, I kept going back and forth between the towering open source giant in the industry: Wordpress and the increasingly robust, though more complex true CMS – Joomla, before determining that it did not make any sense to pick between the two when I could use BOTH! Since then, I am finding all sorts of platforms doing the same thing – sticking with their old tried and true, and simply adding their Wordpress blog to their Internet presence. The best of both worlds.

WordPress is an open source blogging platform that anyone can use for free. You can use it to host your blog or website. You only need to make a few simple tweaks to change your site from a blog to an ordinary website. WordPress will then become the CMS that you use to manage your content.

WordPress is a very versatile CMS. It works with templates – which means that you can change designs very quickly and easily. There are tons of free templates that are available for download. If you are looking for a general template, then a free one will do just fine. But there will be situations when you need better templates. Here are some reasons why you need premium WordPress templates.

1) Duplicate designs.

Free templates mean that the same template may be used by other webmasters. So there is a chance that your website will look similar to other websites. For a greater sense of identity on the Internet, it’s always better to use a unique template.

2) Branding concerns.

It’s almost impossible to brand a Company if you are using a free template. For one, there is no uniqueness. When it comes to branding, you want your customers to recognize your brand and associate your brand with quality. It’s hard to do that if you are using free templates.

3) Functionality issues.

Most free templates are meant for general use. They are not customized to suit the specific needs of any particular group. So if you are an Internet marketer, you may find that you need more advertising space on your blog so that you can generate more revenue. Premium templates will be able to provide such additional functionality.

4) Creating a more positive experience.

Many of the free templates look nice, but you may be unhappy with the experience that these templates offer. For instance, you find that the designs are generally too simple, and the font sizes and colors are not quite right. You can always install a premium template to correct all these issues. By giving a more positive user experience, you are encouraging the visitors to stay longer on your blog, which is always a good thing. You don’t want to chase away all your visitors by having bad designs!

5) Better support.

What happens if you encounter some problems with your template? If you are using a free template, there is no one you can turn to for help. But if you are using a premium template, you can always get support from the designer. This is an important aspect if you are serious about your blog. You want your blog to be working correctly. A blog that is buggy may not be worthwhile visiting.

So is it worth paying good money for premium templates? The answer is a resounding yes! A high quality premium template can give your blog greater functionality and a greater sense of identity on the Internet. In the faceless world of cyber space, a strong sense of identity is very valuable.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to surge suppressors
